Reading Books

Your child's reading book will be changed every Tuesday and Friday. We recommend that you read with your child each night to help improve both fluency and comprehension.

Night 1: Read the book, sound out trickier words.

Night 2: Read the book for fluency.

Night 3: Read the book, focusing on understanding. Asking questions: who/what/how/why.

Library Books

Your child will have the opportunity to choose a book from the school library to take home to read, every Tuesday. Please make sure the library book comes back to school on this day so that your child can choose a new one.

Home Learning Books

Home Learning will be collected on a Monday, and returned to your child on a Tuesday. Each week there will be a short paragraph to let you know what we are learning about, alongside any reminders for the week. There will also be up to 5 spellings to learn.

Swimming

We attend a swimming session on a Friday afternoon, at Spiceball Leisure Centre. The children swim from 2.10. You are most welcome to watch from the foyer.

Term 5 and 6

Our topic this term is: Under the Sea. The children have an exciting term ahead. We are going to learn and write about several different types of fish. We will be reading books such as 'Tiddler' and 'The Rainbow Fish'.

Term 4

Our topic this term is: Holidays! The children have enjoyed learning about Victorian holidays this term. We created a Victorian classroom for an afternoon and the children wrote on blackboards with chalk. We have also been writing postcards from Crabby Beach - the children produced some fantastic writing. As a treat at the end of term, we went pond dipping. We found lots of frog spawn, and a newt! This linked with science this term, as we had learnt about reptiles and amphibians.

Term 3

Our topic this term is: Heroes. The children were lucky enough to have a visit from the firefighters this term. The children were able to look around the fire engine and have a go at squirting water from the hose! We have been creating heroes capes in DT and writing about super heroes in literacy.

Term 2

Our topic this term is: If you go down to the woods today... The children have enjoyed learning about deciduous and evergreen trees, and we have been out around the school grounds exploring what trees we can see. The children  have read and written about several traditional tales this term.

Term 1

Our topic this term is 'All About Me'. The children have enjoyed learning about sketching in art, and have painted some beautiful self portraits. In science, the children have been learning about their body, and were fascinated when learning about their bones and organs.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on the books 'The Driftwood Ball', and 'The Smartest Giant in Town.' Year One have been practicing using full stops, capital letters and finger spaces in their writing, using simple sentences to describe characters and scenery.

More recently in Maths, we have been learning about number bonds to 10, and the children had lots of fun investigating how many number bonds to 10 there are, in the hall.
