Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

Mrs Davis

Mrs Mckenzie-Blythe

Mr Alex Beumont-Dark

Class Governor: Sue English

I hope you and the children enjoyed the summer break and are feeling refreshed and ready for the new school year. This term our exciting new topic is Space; we will be finding out about the science behind our solar system and the history of space travel.

Our focus in Literacy will be on the use of commas to separate clauses, the use of clearly organised paragraphs and using hyphens to avoid ambiguity. The children will be working to apply these skills across a range of text types, including narrative, diary and poetry, making links with our topic work as much as possible. We will also be developing our understanding of grammar and building up our knowledge of a range of different tense, word types and punctuation.

In Maths our work will cover a broad range of subject areas including numbers and calculations, measures, shape and space as well as problem solving and investigations. I will be testing the children weekly on their times tables knowledge; it is vital that your child’s times tables recall is secure as this will really help them in other areas of maths.

Along with their times tables, the children will also be set spellings to learn weekly (to be tested on Fridays). I know that you will continue to encourage and support your child in learning these as it will have a real impact on the quality and level of their writing.  When the children are set separate project based homework, they will be informed as to when this needs to be returned to school.

I am sure that you will continue to encourage your child to read a little every night and record it in their Reading Record.   As I’m sure you are aware, if the children read at least four times a week at home they have the added incentive of receiving a ticket for our termly reading raffle.

PE will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with Tuesday sessions taking place outside on the field. It is important that your child has both a suitable indoor and outdoor kit in school at all times as our timetable can be subject to change – particularly in light of weather conditions.

If you would like any further information about your child’s learning, or would like to offer your help by listening to readers then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
